Introducing Zefiro: A USB-C Musical Innovation
Artinoise, an Italian startup, has unveiled Zefiro, a USB-C mouthpiece that turns smartphones, tablets, and PCs into versatile musical instruments. The device, which resembles a recorder’s mouthpiece, uses its companion app to produce up to 32 different instrument sounds, including flutes, violins, trumpets, and even bagpipes.
When connected, Zefiro acts as a MIDI breath controller. The app displays virtual buttons, keys, or wind holes, while built-in lip and air pressure sensors detect breath intensity to control pitch and volume.
Features that Stand Out
Zefiro’s companion app comes packed with features like breathing exercises, sound layering, a looper function, and background noise customization. Users can record and share audio directly through the app. Artinoise plans to release updates every two months, including customizable interfaces where users can position virtual buttons or add personal images for a unique playing experience.
The device also supports accessibility. Its easy-to-use sensor makes it ideal for users with physical or respiratory challenges. Those with limited lung capacity can adjust settings to require only gentle breath.
Artinoise plans to expand Zefiro’s functionality with optional accessories like a hands-free headpiece, allowing guitarists and pianists to use it as a complementary instrument. The company also envisions open-source applications, enabling developers to create accessibility-focused uses, such as controlling smart home devices.
