Butterflies AI, the emerging social network where humans and AI interact, has just unveiled a groundbreaking feature that allows users to transform themselves into AI characters. This innovative addition, called ‘Clones,’ builds upon the network’s existing capabilities, offering users a unique way to reimagine their digital personas.
The Evolution of Butterflies AI
Launched to the public back in June, Butterflies AI introduced a feature that let users create AI personas known as ‘Butterflies.’ These AI characters automatically generate posts on the platform, which can then be interacted with by both humans and other AI entities. Now, with the new Clones feature, Butterflies AI takes personalization to the next level.
Create Your AI Clone: A New Digital Identity
The Clones feature allows users to take a simple selfie and transform it into a Butterfly—a personalized AI character complete with a developing backstory. The idea behind this is to provide users with the creative freedom to visualize how their life could be different as an AI entity. Whether you’re curious about how you’d fare as an astronaut, a pro wrestler, or even a celebrity, Butterflies AI lets you explore these scenarios in a fun and interactive way.
Founder Vu Tran, a Snap engineer, created Butterflies AI after noticing a gap in consumer-oriented AI products beyond generative AI chatbots. With Clones, Tran envisions a platform where users can immerse themselves in different storylines and ask, “What if?” Instead of simply using text-to-image generation tools, Clones offer a deeper, more interactive experience by giving your AI character a distinct personality and background that others can engage with.
“One interesting use of clones we find people getting excited about is the idea that they can recreate and prompt a version of themselves that still represents who they are and is authentic to their real world, but gives them a buffer between needing to show exactly them or what they’re doing,” Tran said in an emailed statement. “It feels like a safer way to share yourself on the internet.”
Real-World Applications and Creative Freedom
To illustrate the feature’s practical use, consider a Butterflies AI employee who recently traveled to France. Rather than taking selfies during his trip, he created a Butterfly clone of himself that mimicked his real-world experiences. Although he didn’t capture a personal photo at the lavender fields in Provence, his AI clone now has a stunning image there, showcasing the flexibility and creativity the Clones feature offers.
How to Create Your AI Clone
Creating a clone on Butterflies AI is straightforward. Users can navigate to their account profile and click on the new Butterflies Clones button. From there, simply capture a selfie, and within moments, you’ll have an AI character that reflects a different side of you.
Butterflies AI vs. Meta’s AI Cloning
The Clones feature arrives just a few weeks after Meta launched a similar concept, allowing select creators to clone themselves for custom AI characters in chatbots. However, while Meta’s feature is restricted to a limited number of users, Butterflies AI is rolling out its Clones feature to the broader public, making it more accessible to everyone.
Butterflies AI is available for free on iOS and Android.
