YouTube Adds Gifting to Vertical Livestreams
YouTube is introducing a new monetization feature for creators streaming vertically, aiming to rival TikTok’s successful gifting model. Announced on Thursday, the platform now allows viewers to purchase Jewels, a virtual currency, to send animated gifts during vertical livestreams. This move is designed to create more earning opportunities for creators.

How the Gifting System Works?
When viewers buy Jewels and send gifts, creators receive Rubies as compensation. Each Ruby equals one cent, meaning creators earn $1 for every 100 Rubies. However, because Jewel prices vary based on bundle options, the revenue share for creators can differ.
To encourage adoption, YouTube is offering eligible creators a 50% bonus on their earnings from gifts for the next three months. This bonus is capped at $1,000 per month and is in addition to regular Ruby earnings.
Restrictions and Comparison with TikTok
This gifting feature is exclusive to vertical livestreams conducted directly on YouTube or via third-party streaming software. Additionally, viewers can only send gifts through YouTube’s mobile app.
Previously, YouTube allowed monetization through Super Stickers in the chat tab. However, enabling the new gifting feature disables access to Super Stickers. YouTube states that gifts provide a better way for viewers to visually support their favorite creators.

TikTok’s gifting system, which inspired YouTube’s move, has been highly lucrative for creators. Some TikTokers have earned thousands of dollars per month through live streams supported by viewer gifts. Examples include streamers debating political topics or engaging in trending live content like NPC streams, which have gained massive popularity.
Rolling Out in the U.S.
YouTube’s new gifting feature will gradually become available to eligible creators in the U.S. over the next few weeks. This feature aligns with the platform’s strategy to provide creators with competitive tools to increase their earnings and attract more engagement during livestreams.
